As the world marks the 2024 International Day of the Girl, IDG, the Advocacy for Women with Disabilities Initiative, AWWDI is calling for increased efforts to support and empower girls with disabilities.
The theme for this year, “Girls’ Vision for the Future,” reflects the hopes and dreams of girls worldwide, including those living with disabilities.
Executive Director of AWWDI, Patience Dickson, highlighted the unique challenges faced by girls with disabilities in Nigeria.
She noted that these girls not only face barriers due to gender inequality but also struggle with additional challenges related to their disabilities.
“Girls with disabilities deal with stigma, exclusion, and limited access to education, healthcare, and employment opportunities. They are often overlooked in discussions about the future of girls, but they deserve the same chance to succeed as every other girl,” Dickson said.
The Situation in Nigeria
In Nigeria, many girls face obstacles such as limited access to education, early marriage, and gender-based violence. For girls with disabilities, these challenges are often doubled. According to the Nigerian Bureau of Statistics, only about 23% of persons with disabilities have access to education, and the numbers are even lower for girls due to cultural biases and lack of inclusive facilities.
Globally, over 130 million girls are out of school, and a significant number of them are girls with disabilities. These girls face additional struggles in navigating systems that are not designed to accommodate their needs, particularly in rural areas where infrastructure is poor.
AWWDI’s Efforts
Patience Dickson emphasized AWWDI’s commitment to advocating for the rights of girls with disabilities. She called on the government, civil society, and the private sector to invest in inclusive policies and provide necessary support for these girls.
“AWWDI believes that girls with disabilities have the potential to lead and bring about change in their communities. With the right support, they can break barriers and achieve their dreams,” she said.
She also urged stakeholders to prioritize making schools, healthcare services, and public spaces accessible to girls with disabilities. This, she believes, will give them the opportunity to fully participate in society and reach their potential.
Call to Action
AWWDI’s message on this International Day of the Girl is clear: it is time to empower girls with disabilities by addressing the unique challenges they face. Patience Dickson called for more awareness and practical steps to ensure these girls are included in every aspect of society.
“Every girl deserves the chance to shape her future. Let’s work together to make sure girls with disabilities are not left behind. Their dreams and ideas are just as important, and they can make a difference in the world,” Dickson concluded.
As Nigeria joins the rest of the world in celebrating this important day, AWWDI remains committed to ensuring that girls with disabilities are given the support and opportunities they need to thrive.
