The National Commission for Persons with Disabilities (NCPWD) has renewed its commitment to advancing mental health and supporting people with psychosocial disabilities in Nigeria.
The move followed a courtesy visit by Hauwa Ojeifo, Founder and Executive Director of She Writes Woman, and Jennifer Abomnger. They highlighted their organization’s mission to give mental health a voice and empower people with mental health and psychosocial disabilities to share their stories and find solutions.
The partnership between NCPWD and She Writes Woman started three to four years ago when both organizations hosted Nigeria’s first Mental Health Roundtable. The collaboration helped establish the Mental Health Desk within NCPWD.
Hon. Ayuba Burki Gufwan, Executive Secretary of NCPWD, praised the work of She Writes Woman and expressed his readiness to strengthen collaboration. “Disability inclusion is the responsibility of all,” he said. “We look forward to deepening our partnership with She Writes Woman and other organizations to advance the cause of persons with disabilities in Nigeria.”
The discussions also explored new opportunities, including workshops to build capacity on psychosocial disabilities and strengthen NCPWD’s framework for supporting mental health inclusion.
The renewed collaboration ensures that mental health and psychosocial disabilities remain a key focus in the Commission’s wider disability inclusion agenda.
