The Executive Secretary of the National Commission for Persons with Disabilities (NCPWD), Chief Ayuba Burki Gufwan, has expressed deep sorrow over the death of former Governor of the old Gongola State and former National Chairman of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), His Excellency Alhaji Bamanga Mohammed Tukur.
Alhaji Bamanga Tukur, an elder statesman, businessman and former public office holder, died at the age of 90.
In a condolence message, Chief Burki Gufwan described the death of the former governor as a significant loss to Nigeria, noting that the country had lost a colossus and a valuable national asset whose wealth of experience and contributions to national development would be greatly missed.
Bamanga Tukur was widely recognised for his contributions to Nigeria through his involvement in business, public service and national politics. He served as Governor of the old Gongola State and later became National Chairman of the Peoples Democratic Party.
Chief Burki Gufwan also reflected on the late elder statesman’s experience with mobility challenges in his later years. Tukur relied on a wheelchair, which enabled him to maintain a degree of independence and carry out essential daily activities with greater ease.
According to the NCPWD boss, his passing therefore represents a loss not only to the nation but also to the community of persons with disabilities.
He used the opportunity to emphasise the importance of sustained investment in mobility appliances for persons with disabilities and others who require them.
Chief Burki Gufwan noted that access to appropriate mobility aids can significantly improve independence and enable persons with mobility challenges to participate more fully in everyday life.
“Such support remains essential to enable individuals with mobility challenges to live fuller lives and pursue their daily activities without unnecessary hindrance,” he said.
On behalf of the National Commission for Persons with Disabilities, Chief Ayuba Burki Gufwan extended heartfelt condolences to the family of the late elder statesman, the people of Adamawa State and Nigerians across the country.
He prayed that God Almighty would grant Alhaji Bamanga Tukur eternal rest and give his family and loved ones the strength to bear the loss.
The National Commission for Persons with Disabilities joins Nigerians in mourning the death of the former Gongola State governor and former PDP national chairman, whose contributions to public service and national development will be remembered.
