Lafia varsity to begin master’s in disability studies

₦1m reward for Deaf graduates with First Class

The Federal University of Lafia (FULAFIA) will soon start a Professional Master’s Degree in Disability Studies.

This follows a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) signed between the university and Deaf-in-Tech, an initiative of Data-Lead Africa. The agreement was signed at the Deaf-in-Tech headquarters in Abuja.

Prof. Adaka Terfa Ahon, Director of the Centre for Disability Studies, represented the university at the event. He said the Vice Chancellor, Prof. Shehu Abdul Rahman, fully supports the partnership and is committed to promoting inclusion in the university.

The master’s programme will use both online and physical classes, with sessions also held at Deaf-in-Tech’s training centre in Abuja. The course is designed to build knowledge in disability-inclusive governance, education, and development.

Speaking at the event, the Executive Director of Deaf-in-Tech and Co-Founder of Data-Lead Africa, Dr. Arowolo Ayoola, said the partnership is an important step for inclusive education in Nigeria.

“This partnership is more than just academics. It is about preparing institutions, professionals, and policymakers to address disability issues. We are also investing in young Deaf talents and building systems that will support inclusive innovation,” he said.

The deal also includes the setting up of a Deaf-in-Tech Club at the university. The club will train Deaf students in technology skills, provide mentorship, and support innovation.

As part of the agreement, any Deaf student graduating with a First Class in any discipline from the university will receive a ₦1 million reward.

Deaf-in-Tech will also help the university’s Centre for Disability Studies to develop a disability-friendly website and a digital database to improve planning and services for students and staff with disabilities.
