The Federal Government has reaffirmed its commitment to advancing inclusive governance for persons with disabilities PWDs, across Nigeria.
Speaking at the Inaugural National Conference of Heads of Disability Commissions, the Senior Special Assistant to the President on Special Needs and Equal Opportunities, Hon. Mohammed Abba Isa, described the gathering as a historic moment that marks a turning point in the country’s disability inclusion journey.
Abba Isa noted that with the expiration of the five-year moratorium, Nigeria has now fully entered the implementation phase of the Discrimination Against Persons with Disabilities (Prohibition) Act, 2018. He explained that several states have begun setting up agencies to enforce the Act, attributing the progress to tireless advocacy and engagement by stakeholders.
He, however, urged greater collaboration in states where implementation is yet to begin, stressing that the conference provides a unique platform for synergy, knowledge sharing, and collective action that will speed up the Act’s enforcement nationwide.
Highlighting electoral participation as a key priority, the presidential aide said the Tinubu administration remains committed to improving institutional frameworks, expanding accessibility, and ensuring equal opportunities for PWDs in democratic processes.
“My office is always open for collaboration,” Abba Isa assured stakeholders. “Together, we can provide innovative solutions that bridge the gap between individuals with disabilities and equal participation in democratic spaces.”
