CHAI, Special Olympics Partner with NCPWD to Promote Inclusive Health in Nigeria

The Clinton Health Access Initiative, CHAI, and Special Olympics Nigeria have partnered with the National Commission for Persons with Disabilities, NCPWD, to advance inclusive healthcare for persons with intellectual and developmental disabilities in Nigeria.

In a statement by the Head of Media and Publicity at the NCPWD, Ishaku Kigbu, the partnership was reviewed during a high-level meeting at the Commission’s headquarters in Abuja, which brought together disability advocates, development partners, and representatives from other African countries.

The meeting focused on strengthening health systems, promoting inclusion, and deepening collaboration to ensure that persons with disabilities are fully integrated into national development plans.

CHAI Country Director, Martina Onyenwe, described the Rosemary Collaboratory Initiative as a bold step toward building a more inclusive healthcare system, saying it would ensure that persons with intellectual disabilities are not left behind in Nigeria’s health and development agenda.

Executive Secretary of the NCPWD, Chief Ayuba Burki Gufwan, commended CHAI and Special Olympics Nigeria for their leadership and innovation, stressing that partnerships like this are essential to ending discrimination and promoting equality.

The first phase of the initiative focuses on data collection, training health workers, and improving access to healthcare for persons with disabilities. The program, named after Rosemary Kennedy, aims to promote dignity, empowerment, and inclusion across Africa.
