Executive Secretary of the National Commission for Persons with Disabilities, NCPWD, Ayuba Gufwan, has donated 100 wheelchairs to persons with disabilities to mark the 2025 World Polio Day.
The details were contained in a statement by Ishaku Kigbu, Head of Media and Publicity at the Commission.
According to the statement, the event began with an early morning walk from the Old Parade Ground to Area One Roundabout in Abuja and back. It ended with a para-soccer novelty match, highlighting the resilience and talent of persons with disabilities.
Hon. Gufwan, who is a polio survivor, joined the walk and attended the soccer tournament. He said his biggest dream is to see a world free from polio, which he believes is achievable through collective effort.
“My biggest dream is for everyone to live in a polio-free world, and I believe it can be achieved if we all continue to fight together,” he said.
He commended the efforts of partners and supporters working to eradicate polio and encouraged persons with disabilities not to see their condition as a limitation.
“Disability is not a death sentence, but something worthy of overcoming,” Gufwan added.
He also praised the para-soccer teams for their outstanding performance during the games.
The event, held at the Old Parade Ground, Area 10, Abuja, was organised by Rotary International in collaboration with NCPWD, the World Health Organisation (WHO), UNICEF, the National Primary Health Care Development Agency (NPHCDA), and other partners in the global fight against polio.
The ceremony concluded with the presentation of medals, cash rewards, and wheelchairs to participants.
