Electoral Reform: Lois Auta Speaks for Women with Disabilities

Lois Auta, Global President of the Network of Women with Disabilities (NWD), presents a memorandum at the National Assembly Public Hearing on Electoral Reforms in Abuja.

Lois Auta has presented a memorandum on behalf of millions of persons with disabilities, especially women, at the National Public Hearing on Electoral Reforms held today at the National Assembly in Abuja.

Auta, who shared the update on her Facebook handle, said she made the presentation to ensure that the voices of women with disabilities are captured in the ongoing amendment of the Electoral Act.

She noted that the participation of women with disabilities must be seen as an essential part of Nigeria’s democracy and not an afterthought.

Recall that in September, at a separate National Public Hearing on the Reserved Seats Bill held at the Transcorp Hilton, Abuja, Auta had also presented a memorandum on behalf of women with disabilities. At that event, she told lawmakers that “Nigeria’s democracy is incomplete without women, and especially women with disabilities,” and called for their full inclusion in governance.

Her continued presence at these national forums highlights the growing push by women with disabilities to secure representation and legal recognition in both electoral processes and constitutional reforms.
