Tinubu Urged by Down Syndrome Foundation to Implement Disability Laws Nationwide

The Down Syndrome Foundation Nigeria (DSFN) has called on President Bola Ahmed Tinubu and the Federal Government to fully enforce disability laws across the country.

The foundation said this is necessary to protect the rights, health, and well-being of people with intellectual disabilities, who often cannot speak up for themselves.

The call came during the foundation’s 24th annual October event, themed “Health Care for All”, which included an awareness, advocacy, and charity walk ending at the Ikeja Local Government Secretariat. The event was co-sponsored by the Nigeria Sovereign Investment Authority and The 7 Fifteen Philanthropic Foundation.

DSFN said many people with intellectual disabilities are neglected in Nigeria’s healthcare system, leading to preventable illnesses and shorter lifespans. The foundation urged the government to create inclusive healthcare services and enforce the existing laws.

“This year’s theme shows our commitment to ensuring that people with Down syndrome and other intellectual disabilities are recognized and supported in Nigeria’s health policies,” the foundation said.

DSFN also highlighted its programs at its Lagos centre, where participants learn skills like barbing, hairdressing, baking, arts, and leatherwork, under certification from the Lagos State Technical and Vocational Education Board. A fish farming project is also planned to promote independence among participants.

The foundation said: “We want to know why the federal government cannot enforce the existing disability laws to ensure dignity, inclusion, and equal opportunities.”

The advocacy walk attracted support from other organizations, including Pacelli, Punuka Foundation, OCD Foundation, Lady Atinuke, Association of the Physically Challenged, Lion Ability Foundation, Modupe Cole, and Victoria Foundation.

A recent report showed that 17 out of 36 Nigerian states have not yet adopted the Disability Act, limiting its protection to only 19 states. Experts have called on the government to address disability data gaps and tackle discrimination against people with disabilities.

DSFN said full enforcement of disability laws will help Nigeria move closer to equality and inclusion for all citizens.
