AWWDI rallies community leaders to tackle GBV in Abuja

The Advocacy for Women with Disabilities Initiative, AWWDI, has engaged women leaders in Garba community, Bwari Area Council, to strengthen efforts against gender-based violence.

The sensitisation programme, held on November 3, 2025, took place at the newly established Garba Safe Space. It brought together wives of traditional rulers from Garba, Zumaa and Bwari, as well as wives of religious leaders from Ekwa, Catholic, Redeemed and Deeper Life churches.

Leader of the Bwari Self-Help Group, Mrs Ucheria, led the welcome address. She said the gathering showed the power of women coming together to protect their homes and community.

A representative of AWWDI, Mrs Roseline Daniel, made a presentation on “Understanding Gender-Based Violence and Reporting Channels.” She explained the forms of violence and encouraged the women to support survivors by guiding them to safe places to report and receive help.

AWWDI said holding the programme in the Garba Safe Space is part of plans to ensure the project lasts and continues to serve the community. The organisation explained that involving respected women leaders will help break silence around abuse and make the safe space trusted and active.

According to AWWDI, the safe space will remain a centre for learning, protection and support for women and make the report stronger
