Abuja Inquirer reporter nominated as SDG ambassador

Abuja Inquirer’s investigative reporter, Laraba Murey has been nominated as an Ambassador for Sustainable Development Goals, SDG, and Ecosystem Preservation by the Ambassadors for Sustainable Development Goals and Ecosystem Preservation Initiative.

The nomination comes on the heels of the organization's upcoming event, “Launching of Climate Change Education and Awareness Campaign,” scheduled to take place on September 26, 2024, at the Novare Central Mall, Wuse Zone 5, Abuja.

The event, which focuses on raising awareness about climate change and the critical role of renewable energy in mitigating its effects, aims to mobilize advocacy through education in schools, rural areas, and across media platforms.

The organization is also set to formally unveil the "Ambassadors for Sustainable Development Goals and Ecosystem Preservation Initiative," a new body charged with driving SDG-related campaigns and promoting eco-friendly initiatives throughout Nigeria’s 774 local government areas.

As part of the initiative, Laraba Murey has been recognized for her influential work in investigative journalism, especially in shedding light on pressing social issues. Her role as an ambassador will involve promoting the campaign within her sphere of influence, contributing to policy advocacy, and supporting the sustainable development agenda.

In addition to public recognition, ambassadors will benefit from networking opportunities, capacity-building initiatives, and the chance to influence policy and decision-making processes that directly impact sustainable development.

Murey’s nomination aligns with her ongoing work as an advocate for marginalized communities and vulnerable groups, particularly those affected by environmental challenges.

A key highlight of the event will be the launch of a seed fund worth Fifty Million Naira (N50,000,000), which will be used to support advocacy efforts around SDGs and eco-friendly initiatives. The fund aims to bolster grassroots campaigns across Nigeria, especially in underserved communities, ensuring that the conversation around climate change and environmental preservation reaches every corner of the country.

Speaking ahead of the event, Chief Ogakwu Dominic, Founder and Convener of the Ambassadors for Sustainable Development Goals and Ecosystem Preservation Initiative, expressed optimism about the impact the initiative will have.

He stressed the need for robust public and private sector support to accelerate the achievement of SDGs in Nigeria. “This campaign is a step toward ensuring that climate change education reaches even the most remote areas of the country, and we are proud to have distinguished individuals like Laraba Murey leading the charge,” Dominic said.

The nomination of Laraba Murey and other ambassadors marks an important milestone in Nigeria’s ongoing efforts to tackle climate change, preserve ecosystems, and achieve the United Nations’ Sustainable Development Goals by the 2030 target date.

The campaign promises to enhance public understanding of the environmental challenges facing Nigeria and encourage more collective action towards sustainability.

For Murey, this ambassadorial role complements her existing work with various marginalized communities and her dedication to promoting diversity, equity, and inclusion in Nigeria.

Her nomination is a recognition of her commitment to social justice and environmental advocacy through journalism, and it positions her to make an even more significant impact on the country’s sustainable development agenda.
