The Executive Secretary of the National Commission for Persons with Disabilities, NCPWD, Chief Ayuba Gufwan, has decried the devastating impact of corruption on persons with disabilities, PWDs, in Nigeria, stating that the group is being denied basic infrastructure due to rampant embezzlement and misappropriation of public funds.

In a statement by the NCPWD’s Head of Information and Public Relations, JohnMichaels Ikechukwu, Gufwan made this assertion during a courtesy visit to the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission, EFCC headquarters in Abuja.
He commended the EFCC for its commitment to eradicating corruption, describing it as a "hydra-headed monster eating deep into the very fibres of our system."
"I want to sincerely appreciate your doggedness in confronting this major challenge in every sector of our lives, and also to let you know that persons with disabilities are the most affected by this menace," Gufwan said.
He further explained how the siphoning of public funds has resulted in a lack of essential infrastructure and services for PWDs, leaving them marginalized and vulnerable.
In response, EFCC Chairman Dr. Ola Olukoyede reassured Gufwan of the Commission’s readiness to partner with the NCPWD in the fight against corruption, pledging swift action against any financial crimes that target the disability community.
“I am using this opportunity to reassure you of my organization’s readiness to respond as quickly as possible to any distress call from your office,” Olukoyede stated.
During the visit, the EFCC Chairman decorated Gufwan with an Ambassadorial emblem and an Anti-Corruption Award, signaling a strong partnership in tackling financial crimes that disproportionately affect persons with disabilities.
