International Day of the Girl: NAWOJ FCT urges action against gender inequality for girls' future

As the world marks the 2024 International Day of the Girl Child, the Nigerian Association of Women Journalists (NAWOJ) FCT chapter has called for decisive action to address gender inequality and protect the future of girls. Under this year’s theme, "Girls’ Vision for the Future," NAWOJ FCT is amplifying its commitment to ensuring that girls are given equal opportunities to thrive, free from the barriers that currently limit their potential.

In statement commemorating the day, NAWOJ FCT Chairperson Bassey Ita Ikpang highlighted the critical role girls play in shaping the future of society.

However, she lamented the harsh realities many face, such as gender discrimination, child marriage, and limited access to education, which continue to impede their progress.

"Girls represent the future of our society, yet millions are denied their rights to education, protection, and equality," Ikpang stated. "At NAWOJ FCT, we stand firmly against these injustices, and we call on all stakeholders to take urgent steps to end all forms of discrimination against girls."

Global Challenges Facing Girls

According to the United Nations, over 130 million girls worldwide are out of school, with many facing barriers such as early marriage, poverty, and cultural norms that deprive them of their right to education. In Nigeria, data from the National Bureau of Statistics (NBS) indicates that 43% of girls aged 15-19 are married or in a union, a practice that significantly disrupts their education and development.

Additionally, gender-based violence remains a pervasive issue. A report from UNICEF revealed that 1 in 4 Nigerian girls has experienced sexual violence before the age of 18, a statistic that underscores the urgent need for societal protection and gender-responsive policies.

The Role of NAWOJ FCT

Ikpang reaffirmed NAWOJ FCT’s commitment to empowering girls and advocating for their rights. "Girls should not only be seen but heard. Their voices must shape our policies, influence our leaders, and drive our communities toward a more equal and just future," she emphasized.

NAWOJ FCT is actively engaged in creating safe spaces for girls, where they can freely express their ideas and aspirations without fear of discrimination or violence. The organization has been a vocal advocate for girls' education and protection, consistently urging the Nigerian government and civil society to invest in resources and policies that uplift girls and young women.

Ikpang further called on the government to uphold existing laws, such as the Child Rights Act and the Violence Against Persons (Prohibition) Act, to ensure girls are protected from harmful practices like child marriage, abuse, and neglect. She also noted that gender inequality is not only a violation of human rights but also a detriment to economic development. Research shows that educating girls can boost economic growth, reduce poverty, and improve public health.

A Call for Collective Action

NAWOJ FCT urged civil society, government institutions, parents, and community leaders to work collectively in removing barriers to girls' progress. “It is essential to prioritize the protection and empowerment of girls, ensuring they have the same opportunities as boys,” Ikpang stated.

The association called for improved access to education, especially in rural and underserved areas, and greater investment in programs that mentor and support girls. “We must listen to our girls, invest in their education, and champion their rights. Only then can we achieve the equal future we envision—a future where every girl’s voice contributes to the betterment of society,” Ikpang concluded.

As the 2024 International Day of the Girl Child continues to inspire global reflection on the challenges girls face, NAWOJ FCT remains steadfast in its advocacy for a world where every girl can fulfill her potential, free from the constraints of gender inequality.

With Nigeria's population of girls under 15 making up nearly 23% of the total population, the future of the nation depends significantly on how well these girls are nurtured, protected, and empowered. NAWOJ FCT’s call to action is not just timely, but vital, as the world moves towards creating a more inclusive and equitable future for all.
