The National Commission for Persons with Disabilities, NCPWD and the Leprosy Mission Nigeria have announced plans to collaborate on inclusive projects for Persons with Disabilities, PWDs, in 2025.
During a courtesy visit to the Leprosy Mission Nigeria on Wednesday, in Abuja, Chief Ayuba Gufwan, the Executive Secretary of NCPWD, expressed appreciation for the Leprosy Mission’s commitment to supporting the PWD community.
He emphasized the importance of inclusive policies, which align with the aspirations of PWDs across various clusters.
"It was the missionaries from the Leprosy Mission that made it possible for me to access education at the time I was diagnosed with Poliomyelitis," Gufwan said. He further appealed for the Mission's continued involvement in the outlined 2025 projects, stressing the significance of data collection for better planning. "Data collection is essential for proper planning, which is why it remains a key priority in our six-point agenda for disability-inclusive projects."
In response, Dr. Sunday Udoh, National Director of Leprosy Mission Nigeria, emphasized the need for a comprehensive communication strategy to advance the organization’s goals. He also urged the Commission to push for a dedicated allocation within the national budget as a Disability Sustainable Allowance for PWDs.
“The Commission needs to advocate for a specific fraction of the national budget to be set aside for PWDs. This is essential to ensure sustainable support,” Udoh said. He assured NCPWD of the Leprosy Mission’s full backing in ensuring a seamless partnership into 2025 and beyond.
