Chidinma’s Miss Universe Win Sparks National Pride

Nigeria’s Minister of Art, Culture, Tourism, and the Creative Economy, Barrister Hannatu Musa Musawa, has commended Chidinma Adetshina for her remarkable achievement as the first runner-up in the 2024 Miss Universe pageant.

The event, held at the Arena CDMX in Mexico City over the weekend, saw Adetshina make history as she captivated an international audience with her poise, advocacy, and representation of Nigeria’s rich cultural heritage.

In a statement issued by her Special Adviser on Media and Publicity, Nneka Ikem Anibeze, Ph.D., Minister Musawa described Adetshina’s feat as a reflection of Nigerian resilience, creativity, and excellence on a global platform. "Chidinma's achievement is a shining example of the creative and innovative spirit that defines our nation," Musawa said. "Her unwavering focus and determination have brought great pride to Nigeria, and she serves as a beacon of inspiration for young women across the country to pursue greatness."

Musawa highlighted the broader significance of Adetshina's success, emphasizing that it speaks to the strength and potential of Nigeria’s youth and women.

"Her commitment to empowering women and girls through education and advocacy aligns with our ministry's vision for a vibrant and inclusive creative economy," she added.

The minister expressed pride not only in Adetshina's accomplishments but also in the positive image she has portrayed of Nigeria on an international stage, noting that her impact will resonate for years to come.

Adetshina’s achievement at Miss Universe comes with substantial rewards, including a $100,000 cash prize, a one-year lease on a luxury apartment in New York, a $3 million diamond-encrusted crown, and access to influential networks within the modeling and entertainment industry.

These resources are expected to serve as a launchpad for her career in the global fashion and advocacy space.

Musawa also underscored the value of Adetshina’s representation of Nigerian culture, describing her as “a shining star and Nigeria’s pride.” She added, "Nigerians are proud to celebrate her success and recognize the impact that she has made on the global stage." Musawa further pledged the ministry’s commitment to promoting talents like Adetshina’s, particularly women in the creative sector. "As we celebrate Chidinma's success, we reaffirm our commitment to supporting and empowering creative talents, particularly women, to excel in their chosen fields."

The 2024 Miss Universe competition brought together 125 contestants from various countries, all vying for the prestigious title. Ultimately, Denmark’s Victoria Kjær Theilvig emerged as Miss Universe, with Adetshina securing a close second place—a position that has cemented her as a symbol of national pride and a role model for young Nigerians.

Adetshina’s accomplishment has sparked a wave of celebration across Nigeria, as many see her success as a testament to the potential of Nigerian youth and a milestone for women’s representation on the world stage. The Ministry of Art, Culture, Tourism, and the Creative Economy hopes that Adetshina’s achievement will inspire more Nigerian women to pursue their dreams and make their mark globally.
