In a press statement by Bankole to mark the International Day of Persons with Disabilities, IDPD, 2024, Bankole emphasized the need for states that have not yet domesticated the Act to act swiftly.
He stated, "States yet to domesticate the Discrimination Against Persons with Disabilities Act, 2018 must act swiftly to uphold the rights of PWDs and promote inclusion within their jurisdictions."
Bankole also stressed the efforts of the APC-led Federal Government under President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, GCFR, in prioritizing the inclusion of PWDs through policies that promote social protection, employment opportunities, and accessibility.
He noted, "The APC-led Federal Government has continued to champion policies that prioritize inclusion and accessibility. Through initiatives that promote social protection, employment opportunities, and accessibility in public infrastructure, the government has shown dedication to empowering PWDs."
The APC leader also advocated for enhanced economic inclusion of PWDs, urging both government and private sector leaders to create pathways for PWDs to access entrepreneurship opportunities, skills development, and employment opportunities suited to their unique capabilities.
"Targeted programs should be introduced to enhance the economic inclusion of PWDs. These initiatives should include access to entrepreneurship opportunities, skills development, and employment tailored to their unique capabilities," he added.
Bankole further stressed the importance of audits and modifications of public infrastructure to ensure accessibility for all.
"Comprehensive audits and modifications to public infrastructure are necessary to ensure accessibility for all," he said.
In line with the celebrations, Bankole also called for intensified efforts to combat stigma and discrimination against PWDs, urging public awareness campaigns and education programs.
"Efforts to combat stigma and discrimination must be intensified. Public awareness campaigns and education programs can foster understanding and acceptance of PWDs," he stated.
Bankole also pointed out the challenges facing PWDs due to the current economic climate, noting how the rising cost of living and limited access to economic opportunities disproportionately impact them.
"Despite these commendable efforts, the prevailing economic challenges in the country have disproportionately impacted PWDs, many of whom face barriers to employment and social services. Rising costs of living and limited access to economic opportunities exacerbate the vulnerabilities of this group."
Bankole reaffirmed the APC’s commitment to the empowerment of PWDs, stating, "The IDPD is a reminder that inclusion is not just a moral imperative but a necessary step toward national progress. As we celebrate the resilience and achievements of PWDs, we are reminded of the transformative power of inclusion and diversity in building a stronger, more equitable society."
He called on all stakeholders, including governments at all levels, private sector leaders, and civil society, to join hands in creating a future where everyone, regardless of ability, can lead and contribute meaningfully to the nation’s development.
"We must all come together to create a future where everyone, regardless of ability, can lead and contribute meaningfully to the nation’s development," he said.
