New Gombe INEC Boss Promises Teamwork

Resident Electoral Commissioner (REC), Dr. Sa’ad Umar Idris With Management Team

The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) in Gombe State has officially welcomed a new Resident Electoral Commissioner (REC), Dr. Sa’ad Umar Idris, following a handover ceremony held at the commission’s office.

Dr. Idris took over from the outgoing REC, Alhaji Ibrahim Umar, who handed over leadership duties after completing his tenure. The event was attended by the Administrative Secretary, Heads of Departments (HODs), and other key staff of the commission.

The ceremony started with an opening prayer, followed by a brief address by the Administrative Secretary. He stressed the importance of a smooth transition and highlighted the commission’s commitment to credible elections and strong institutions.

In his remarks, the outgoing REC, Alhaji Umar, spoke about the state of INEC operations in Gombe, which has 11 local government areas. He mentioned some challenges during his time, including windstorms that damaged some LGA offices at the start of the rainy season. However, he noted that there were no major issues and expressed confidence in his successor’s ability to continue the work effectively.

“I believe Gombe will not pose serious problems. I welcome you warmly and wish you success,” he told the incoming REC, while also pledging his support.

Responding, the new REC, Dr. Idris, thanked his predecessor for the detailed handover and warm reception. He urged staff to stay committed to professionalism, integrity, dedication, and teamwork.

“I’m open and accessible to everyone—whether HOD or junior staff. Feel free to share ideas that can help INEC grow,” he said, adding that transparency and unity are key to success.

The formal signing and exchange of the handover notes followed. Both RECs endorsed the documents listing office operations, assets, and ongoing responsibilities.

A group photo was taken to mark the occasion, symbolizing unity and shared commitment within the commission.

After the ceremony, the two RECs visited the official residence of the new REC to assess its condition. They also inspected the INEC zonal store in Gombe, where sensitive and non-sensitive materials are kept.

Dr. Idris wasted no time getting to work. He held a meeting with management staff to discuss urgent matters and later met with the general staff in a casual “meet-and-greet” session. He emphasized his desire for an open and friendly work environment.

A broader meeting with all Electoral Officers across the state has also been scheduled for next week, according to INEC officials.
