Only 2 Women, No PWD in Anambra Gov Race — INEC

The Independent National Electoral Commission,INEC, has released the final list of candidates for the 2025 Anambra State Governorship election, revealing that only two women are running for the top seat and no person with disability is among the candidates.


This was made known in a press release signed by Sam Olumekun, National Commissioner and Chairman, Information and Voter Education Committee, on Wednesday, June 4, 2025.


Olumekun said that although 16 political parties are contesting the election, only the African Action Congress (AAC) and the National Rescue Movement (NRM) nominated female governorship candidates, while six parties are fielding female running mates.


He added, “No party has nominated a person with disability as a candidate.”


INEC noted that the candidates’ ages range between 36 and 71 years, and that details such as age, gender, party affiliation and qualifications have been uploaded to the Commission’s website and social media platforms.


The statement also confirmed that campaigns will officially begin on Wednesday, June 11 and must end by midnight on Thursday, November 6, 2025, ahead of the election slated for Saturday, November 8.


Olumekun warned political parties and candidates to obey the Electoral Act by avoiding abusive language, violence, or destruction of campaign materials, and urged equal access to public spaces and media for all contestants regardless of party or position.
