The Independent National Electoral Commission, INEC, on Wednesday formally opened campaigns for the 2026 Federal Capital Territory, FCT, Area Council election.

In a statement by INEC's National Commissioner and Chairman of the Information and Voter Education Committee, Sam Olumekun, he said political parties can now campaign in public from September 24, 2025, until midnight on February 19, 2026, ahead of the polls scheduled for February 21, 2026.

INEC reminded candidates and their supporters that it is illegal to use abusive language, attack opponents, or destroy campaign materials during rallies, processions, or meetings.

The commission also stressed that all parties and candidates must have equal access to public facilities for media campaigns, outdoor advertising, and public rallies. Section 95(2) of the Electoral Act prohibits the use of incumbency to benefit or disadvantage any party or candidate.

Mr. Olumekun said the rules are meant to ensure a free, fair, and peaceful campaign period.
