International journalist Amaka Okoye has been appointed as the Bureau Chief for Deutsche Welle, DW in Lagos, Nigeria.
Okoye made the announcement on her Facebook page, describing the new role as “a new beginning and homecoming.” She revealed that after spending two years at DW headquarters in Bonn and most recently in Berlinwhere she combined her work with further studies in International Media Studies she is returning to Nigeria to lead the broadcaster’s Lagos bureau.
Despite her new leadership role, Okoye noted that she will also continue to serve as a West Africa correspondent, a responsibility she described as “something I haven’t done for the past two years.”
She expressed gratitude to her colleagues in Bonn and Berlin as well as the Lagos team she will now lead, naming Wole, Malam Uwaisu Abubakar Idris, Alfred, Okechukwu, Azeezat, Rose, and Olisa.
“The expectations are high as with any new position and in this case, the responsibility of leading a team comes with even more,” Okoye wrote, adding that she looks forward to working with her colleagues to shape narratives and tell stories that matter across West Africa and beyond.
Deutsche Welle, Germany’s international broadcaster, has maintained a strong presence in Africa, with Okoye’s appointment reaffirming its commitment to the region.
