Cleric apologises for post seeking wife for autistic man

A cleric has apologised following backlash over a viral social media post in which he sought a wife for a man living with autism.

The post, which circulated widely online, drew criticism from members of the public and disability rights advocates, who described it as inappropriate and insensitive.

In the message, the cleric had called for a woman willing to marry the man, a move many said reduced the dignity of both the individual and potential suitors.

Amid the growing reactions, the cleric issued an apology, stating that he did not intend to offend or demean women.

He explained that his action was driven by concern for the welfare of the man, whom he said requires care and support due to his condition.

The cleric added that efforts to secure caregivers for the individual had been unsuccessful, prompting him to explore alternative means of support.

He, however, acknowledged that making such a request publicly was inappropriate and had been misunderstood.

Stakeholders have since stressed the need for greater awareness on disability rights, noting that persons with autism deserve respect, autonomy and inclusion in all aspects of society.

They also called on religious and community leaders to adopt more sensitive and rights-based approaches when addressing issues affecting persons with disabilities.
