The Joint National Association of Persons with Disabilities has called for collective action to end discrimination against children with Down syndrome.

The association made the call in a statement issued on March 21 to mark World Down Syndrome Day, expressing solidarity with persons with the condition, their families and advocates.

JONAPWD President, Abdullahi Aliyu Usman, said the day should go beyond celebration to a moment of reflection and action to address barriers affecting persons with Down syndrome.

He noted that many individuals still face exclusion in education, healthcare, employment and social participation, despite growing conversations around inclusion.

Usman added that their rights are often overlooked, stressing that inclusion should be treated as a fundamental human right rather than charity.

The association urged government at all levels to strengthen and fully implement policies that protect the rights and dignity of persons with disabilities.

It also called on schools to provide inclusive learning environments that support children with Down syndrome to learn and thrive alongside others.

JONAPWD further appealed to families and communities to reject stigma and promote acceptance, understanding and support.

The group reaffirmed its commitment to advocating for the rights of persons with disabilities, noting that individuals with Down syndrome can contribute meaningfully to society when given equal opportunities.

It urged Nigerians to move beyond awareness and take practical steps to promote inclusion and equality for all.
