UNILAG researcher urges AI adoption for ADHD children

A researcher at the University of Lagos, Chidiebere Nwaneto, has advocated the use of artificial intelligence-driven learning tools to support children living with Attention-Deficit/Hyperactivity Disorder.

Nwaneto made the call in a statement made available on Thursday, stressing the need for stakeholders in the education sector to move beyond conventional teaching methods and embrace adaptive technologies that address diverse learning needs.

He noted that children with ADHD often struggle with short attention span, distraction, impulsivity and low engagement, adding that many existing learning platforms do not adequately cater to these challenges.

According to him, artificial intelligence can help personalise learning, making it more engaging and responsive to individual learners.

“The future of education must be inclusive. Technology should work for every child, not just the majority,” he said.

The researcher also urged policymakers to prioritise inclusive digital education, while calling on schools to adopt adaptive tools that can improve learning outcomes for neurodiverse students.

He further appealed to technology developers to incorporate accessibility and personalisation into educational platforms.

Nwaneto also encouraged parents, educators and advocacy groups to promote awareness about ADHD, as well as support early diagnosis and structured learning interventions.

The statement added that the research, which is ongoing, is being supervised by Professor Chika Yinka-Banjo and Dr Yetunde Folajimi.
