Autism advocacy gains ground as Abiodun seeks deeper understanding, donates ₦20m

Autism advocacy efforts gained fresh momentum on Tuesday as Ogun State Governor, Dapo Abiodun, said his engagement with campaigners had deepened his understanding of the condition, while announcing a ₦20 million donation to support awareness initiatives.
Abiodun made this known while receiving members of the “Cycling for Autism with KanyeChukwu” team at his office in Abeokuta. The governor noted that increased interaction with advocates and families of persons with autism was helping to reshape public perception, stressing that the condition requires understanding, patience, and structured support.

He described individuals living with autism as people with unique abilities, adding that exposure to their experiences underscores the need for inclusion and deliberate support systems. Abiodun commended the parents of autistic teen and artist, Kanyeyachukwu Tagbo-Okeke, for their commitment, noting that nurturing such talents could change prevailing narratives about autism.

The advocacy team, led by Tagbo Okeke, is currently undertaking a cross-country cycling campaign from Enugu to Lagos to raise awareness and promote acceptance. Okeke said the initiative was designed to engage communities, schools, and religious institutions, while drawing attention to the realities faced by families of persons with autism.

He added that the campaign is also fostering partnerships aimed at strengthening advocacy efforts and expanding support systems across the country. The visit, stakeholders say, reflects a growing intersection between grassroots advocacy and government engagement, with calls for more informed and inclusive policies on developmental conditions.
