IDG 2024: TEC urges strategic investment in girls' potential

As Nigeria joins the rest of the world in celebrating the International Day of the Girl Child, Tabitha Empowerment Centre,TEC, has issued a call for strategic investments in the potential of girls, particularly in Nigeria, to drive social progress and economic development.

At events held in Abuja and Kaduna to commemorate the day, TEC emphasized the urgent need for concerted action to address the systemic barriers hindering Nigerian girls from achieving their full potential.

Speaking at the Abuja event, Advocacy Officer and In-house Lawyer, Gladys Emmanuel for Tabitha Empowerment Centre reiterated that despite overwhelming challenges such as limited access to quality education, disproportionate domestic responsibilities, and restricted economic opportunities.

Nigerian girls, when given the right support, have the capacity to transform their lives, their families, and their communities.

"Girls represent the future of our country, and investing in them is essential for building stronger families and more resilient communities," the spokesperson said. "We need to act now by bringing governments, NGOs, civil society, and all stakeholders together to eliminate the barriers holding Nigerian girls back."

As part of the celebration, donations were made by Tabitha Empowerment Centre in collaboration with Lehi Social Impact Foundation, to provide girls with essential educational supplies and resources. These contributions aim to enhance learning opportunities for young girls, particularly those in underserved communities, and to support their pursuit of a brighter future.

TEC noted that in Nigeria, girls continue to face a heavy burden of unpaid domestic work, with over 160 million additional hours spent on household duties compared to their male counterparts. This disparity significantly impacts their ability to pursue education and career opportunities, limiting their prospects. The coalition urged the Nigerian government and private sector to take bold steps to ensure that girls have access to quality education, healthcare, and leadership development opportunities.

At the Kaduna event, TEC reaffirmed its commitment to creating safe spaces where girls can flourish, calling on communities to amplify girls' voices and invest in proven solutions that promote gender equality. The organization also urged for stronger societal protection of girls’ rights and the provision of essential tools needed for their success.

TEC’s commemorations in both Abuja and Kaduna underscore the continued urgency of raising awareness about the importance of girls’ empowerment, with hopes that sustained actions by Nigerians will lead to a brighter future where every girl in the country can reach her full potential.
