As the world marks International Women’s Day (IWD) 2025, the Nigeria Association of Women Journalists (NAWOJ), FCT Chapter, has reiterated its commitment to amplifying the voices of rural women and accelerating action toward gender equality.
Speaking on the theme "Accelerate Action", the Chairperson of NAWOJ FCT, Comrade Bassey Ita Ikpang, emphasized the need for deliberate efforts to break barriers hindering women’s development, particularly in rural communities.
"On this special day, we stand in solidarity with women in the FCT as we join others globally to push for gender equity," Ikpang stated. "While we acknowledge the strides made, significant challenges remain, especially for women in underserved communities."
With the sub-theme "Amplifying the Voice of Rural Women," NAWOJ FCT is drawing attention to the persistent issues rural women face, including limited access to education, economic opportunities, healthcare, and political representation. The association has pledged to use media advocacy to highlight these challenges and push for policies that promote women’s empowerment.
Call to Action
NAWOJ FCT has called on key stakeholders to take urgent action:
Government agencies should implement and enforce policies that support gender equality and create sustainable empowerment programs for rural women.
Traditional and community leaders must champion women’s rights and eliminate harmful cultural practices that hinder progress.
Corporate bodies and development partners should invest in skill acquisition, entrepreneurship, and healthcare initiatives targeting women in underserved communities.
The media should continue amplifying women’s voices and advocating for equal opportunities.
Commitment to Women’s Empowerment
Ikpang reaffirmed NAWOJ FCT’s dedication to ensuring women’s issues remain a priority. "Through strategic partnerships, media advocacy, and capacity-building initiatives, we will continue to push for the empowerment of women across all sectors," she said.
As Nigeria joins the global community in celebrating IWD 2025, NAWOJ FCT is urging all stakeholders to move beyond rhetoric and take bold steps to create a society where every woman, regardless of her background, has the opportunity to thrive.
"Together, let’s accelerate action and amplify the voices of rural women," Ikpang concluded.
