Gombe Disburses ₦1.5bn to 18,750 Students, Doubles Disabled Students’ Allowances

The Gombe State Government has disbursed ₦1.5 billion in scholarship funds to 18,750 students studying in tertiary institutions across the country. The move is part of efforts to support access to education and ease the financial burden on beneficiaries.

Governor Muhammadu Inuwa Yahaya (CON) launched the payment on Tuesday, November 4, 2025, in Gombe. The state also announced an over 100 percent increase in scholarship allowances for all students and a 200 percent allowance increase for students with disabilities.

Speaking during the flag-off, Governor Yahaya said the decision reflects the government’s commitment to ensuring equal access to education.“We want every student from Gombe to have a fair chance to complete their education, including those living with disabilities,” he said. “This support is necessary to help our students cope with current economic realities.”

The initiative also aligns with the Gombe State Disability Law (2024), under which students with disabilities in state-owned universities and colleges are already exempted from tuition fees.

The Executive Secretary of the Gombe State Scholarship Board, Abdullahi Jalo, said the payment covers fresh and returning students across public and private institutions.

“What we are doing goes beyond routine assistance. It is a deliberate investment in human capital development,” he said.

Disability advocates have welcomed the move, describing it as a step toward inclusive governance and educational equity.
