Adamawa records 190,314 persons with physical disabilities – report

Adamawa State has recorded 190,314 persons with physical disabilities, the highest among disability clusters in the state, according to data from the Joint National Association of Persons with Disabilities (JONAPWD).

The figures are part of the disability-disaggregated dataset unveiled by JONAPWD to support inclusive planning and targeted interventions for persons with disabilities across Nigeria.

A breakdown of the data for Adamawa shows that 163,037 persons are living with hearing impairments, while 155,118 have visual impairments.

The report further indicates that 71,593 persons are living with intellectual disabilities, while 63,638 persons have albinism in the state.

It also shows that 59,661 persons are affected by leprosy, while 55,683 persons are living with spinal cord injuries.

Other categories include 31,819 persons classified under other disabilities, as well as 2,306 persons who are deaf-blind and 1,591 persons with little stature, representing the lowest figures.

The Adamawa data forms part of a broader national dataset which estimates that Nigeria has about 35 million persons with disabilities, with disaggregation by gender, state and disability type.

The dataset is expected to guide government and development partners in designing programmes that address the specific needs of persons with disabilities, particularly in areas such as healthcare, education and social support.

The report also highlights broader challenges faced by persons with disabilities, especially women, including limited access to education, economic exclusion, gender-based violence and social barriers.

Experts say the availability of detailed state-level data will support better planning and improve inclusion for persons with disabilities in Adamawa State.
