IWD 2026: CCD seeks inclusion of women with disabilities in leadership, justice systems

The Centre for Citizens with Disabilities has called for increased inclusion of women with disabilities in leadership, governance and justice institutions in Nigeria.

The organisation made the call on Saturday in a statement to mark the 2026 International Women’s Day, noting that women with disabilities remain under-represented in key decision-making spaces.

CCD Acting Director, Godwin Unumeri, said women and girls with disabilities continue to face multiple forms of discrimination driven by gender inequality, disability stigma and institutional barriers.

He noted that the challenges limit their access to justice, restrict their participation in public life and expose them to abuse and exploitation.

According to him, the absence of women with disabilities in leadership positions has resulted in policies and programmes that do not adequately address their needs.

Unumeri urged government and relevant stakeholders to ensure the inclusion of women with disabilities in political and justice systems, as well as remove structural barriers hindering their participation.

He added that promoting inclusive governance is essential to achieving gender equality and protecting the rights of women and girls with disabilities.
