The Gombe State Commission for Persons with Disabilities, in collaboration with the Chairman of Gombe Local Government Area, Barrister A.A. Sani Haruna, has provided cash assistance and mobility aids to orphans with disabilities in the state.
The intervention, carried out on Tuesday, was part of activities to support vulnerable groups during the Ramadan season ahead of the Sallah celebration.
Beneficiaries received cash support to cater for basic needs, including clothing and other essentials, while students with mobility challenges at Jauro Tudun Wada Junior Secondary School were given crutches to enhance their movement to and from school.
Speaking at the event, the Executive Chairman of the commission, Ishiyaku Adamu, described the gesture as a demonstration of commitment to inclusion and social protection for persons with disabilities.
He commended the local government chairman for the collaboration and urged families to prioritise education for children with disabilities in line with provisions of the state’s disability law.
Also speaking, the school principal, Hajiya Zulaihatu, appreciated the support, noting that it would ease challenges faced by students and improve their learning experience.
A representative of the beneficiaries, Mama Ismail, expressed gratitude for the intervention and assured that the support would be used for the wellbeing of the children.
The commission reaffirmed its commitment to partnering with stakeholders to improve the lives of persons with disabilities across the state.
