The National Agency for the Prohibition of Trafficking in Persons has rescued an elderly woman from alleged prolonged domestic abuse by her son in Gwarinpa Estate.
The agency confirmed that the suspect, a man in his mid-30s, has been taken into custody following the intervention of its operatives.
According to NAPTIP, the incident was reported by concerned residents who raised alarm over the repeated abuse of the victim. The agency said its Rapid Response Squad swiftly mobilised to the location, secured the safety of the elderly woman, and arrested the suspect.
Preliminary investigations revealed that the alleged abuse had persisted for some time, with the victim reportedly enduring repeated acts of violence in violation of the Violence Against Persons (Prohibition) Act.
NAPTIP disclosed that the victim is currently receiving care and support, while efforts are ongoing to ensure her protection and rehabilitation.
The agency added that the suspect will be prosecuted in accordance with the law upon the conclusion of investigations.
It commended members of the public for their vigilance and urged Nigerians to continue reporting cases of abuse, violence, and exploitation, stressing that timely intervention can save lives.
