The Advocacy for Women with Disabilities Initiative (AWWDI) has signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with the Nigeria Meteorological Agency (NiMet) to tackle the climate change and weather-related challenges faced by persons with disabilities (PWDs) across Nigeria.
In a statement issued by Program Manager of AWWDI, Kolawole Jayeoba, said the collaboration is described as a groundbreaking initiative that will promote inclusivity and reduce the climate vulnerability of PWDs.

By providing weather updates in formats such as braille, audio, and sign language, we are reducing the vulnerability of PWDs to climate-related risks and disasters,” Jayeoba stated.
He further highlighted the broader goals of the initiative, which include creating inclusive weather reports and developing climate adaptation strategies tailored specifically to PWDs. "Through this collaboration, we aim to empower PWDs to take proactive measures and prepare effectively for extreme weather events," Jayeoba added.
The MoU also focuses on raising awareness and building capacity within PWD communities on the impacts of climate change. Supported by the Disability Rights Fund (DRF), the initiative aims to ensure that marginalized groups are not left behind in critical discussions on climate adaptation and disaster preparedness.
NiMet’s role in the collaboration will include integrating accessible communication methods into its weather forecasting system. This will ensure that PWDs receive vital weather information in formats such as braille, sign language videos, and audio bulletins.
Jayeoba expressed optimism that the partnership would inspire other agencies to adopt inclusive practices in their operations, particularly in sectors like disaster management and public safety.
This strategic partnership underscores the urgent need for inclusive climate action in Nigeria, where extreme weather events, including flooding and heatwaves, have increasingly impacted vulnerable populations. AWWDI, known for its relentless advocacy for women with disabilities, continues to demonstrate leadership in promoting environmental and social justice for PWDs.
